Stem Cell Policy in the Obama Age

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Ellen participated last fall at the James A Baker Institute for Public Policy’s, “Stem Cell Policy in the Obama Age: Texas, U.S., and U.K. Perspectives” conference and the conference report has recently been released. The Baker Institute is affiliated with Rice University. Scientists and advocates from the U.S. and the U.K. gathered in Houston to discuss the latest developments in stem cell research.

Here’s an except from the publication:

Arnold believes that a general lack of understanding in the state house about the hESC sources, research and potential benefits led to multiple attempts to pass restrictive legislation. Arnold also feels that many public research institutions have been reluctant to discuss their research or the economic imparts of criminalizing hESC research, leading legislators to believe that prohibitive bills would not affect Texas.

Ellen’s presentation focused on the legislative activities of the Texas Legislature since 2003 relating to stem cells and stem cell research. Download the full report here. Ellen’s remarks begin on page nine.

Austin Statesman Editorial Says Its Time to Buckle Up!

Click here to read the recent Austin American Statesman articles about child safety seats.

During the last Texas Legislature Arnold Public Affairs assisted its client, the Texas Parent Teacher Association, in passing legislation to require children all children under the age of 8 and under 4 feet, 9 inches tall to be in child safety seats when traveling in motor vehicles.

The statistics and studies overwhelmingly show that children not traveling in safety seats are more likely to suffer injuries or die in motor vehicle accidents .Under the previous law, safety seats were required only for children under age 5 and under 36 inches in height.

Ellen receives “Eanespiration” Award

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Watch The Video of Ellen receiving the award.

Ellen, before she became a lobbyist, was an elementary school principal in a suburb of Austin. When the elementary school found itself without a principal late last year, she was asked to fill in for the spring semester until the school could find a new principal.

The “Eanespiration Award”, is given to Eanes employees who “have completed an exceptional act or special effort that clearly exceeded his or her job responsibilities”.

In nominating Ellen for the award, one colleague said, “She has given 150% of her time, talent and energy to guide us forward. She has maintained the highest level of integrity and sensitivity in the process, always setting an example for others…”

Another colleague wrote this about Ellen, “In this short time, she has earned overwhelming respect from students, parents and staff.”

Lobbying may look a lot easier than running an elementary school!

Governor touts UPS’ alternative fuel fleet

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

STAFFORD – Gov. Rick Perry today reiterated the importance of providing incentives, rather than onerous mandates, to encourage innovation in business and technology. The governor spoke at the rollout of UPS’ expanded fleet of hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), the first to be introduced in Texas through Senate Bill 1759 of the 81st Legislative Session, which provides grants from the Texas Emissions Reduction Plan Fund for large fleet owners to convert old diesel vehicles to alternative fuel vehicles.

“When we apply incentives instead of crushing mandates, we appeal to the innovators and visionaries and end up with better technology and smarter approaches,” Gov. Perry said. “UPS is clearly stepping out ahead of the pack with this initiative, and setting an example for their peers in the marketplace that will make the competition even more productive.”

Texas has a record of working proactively to protect natural resources and improve environmental quality, and air in Texas is cleaner today than it was 10 years ago. We have reduced nitrogen oxide emissions by 46 percent and cut ozone levels by 22 percent, all without government mandates or extravagant fines. Rather than making traditional energy sources more expensive, Texas leaders continue to support making alternative energy technologies less expensive, thereby encouraging widespread commercial use and removing barriers to innovation and competition.

UPS plans to deploy 200 next-generation hybrid electric delivery trucks this year, including 25 in Houston and 30 in Austin, to add to its existing fleet of 50 HEVs already operating in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and Phoenix. These new trucks are part of more than 2,000 alternative-fuel vehicles already in use by UPS that are powered by compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, propane and electricity.

HEV technology can yield a 35 percent increase in fuel economy and a dramatic decrease in vehicle emissions over traditional UPS delivery vehicles. The 200 trucks UPS plans to deploy are expected to save 176,000 gallons of fuel annually and reduce CO2 emissions by more than 1,700 metric tons each year.

UPS was the first package delivery company to introduce an HEV into daily operations with a research program launched in early 1998. In 2001, the company deployed the industry’s first hybrid electric package car into regular service in Huntsville, Ala.
